“It’s been a long time, been a long time” since Led Zeppelin got its start. Fifty years ago, this fall, to be exact. As part of the celebration honoring half a decade of rock, the band has released a series of interviews with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones reflecting on their careers, specific songs, albums and more. They’re also working with Fender to recreate Page’s dragon Telecaster that started it all. Here’s to a happy anniversary and hoping this classic band continues to ramble on and sing their songs!

LOVE this project taken on by bottle shop manager turned designer, Heidi Geist. She recently hit the road (in a tricked out school bus), embarking on a yearlong journey to design labels and other artworks for breweries in the 48 contiguous states. Heidi sees the 48 Beer Project as a way to combine two industries she loves (us, too, Heidi!), meet new people and share stories. Sounds like a great adventure, and we can’t wait to see the results. Follow along here.

It may have gotten lost in the hype over Halloween‘s 40th anniversary and latest sequel, but there’s another Halloween film at the box office this month with some big names in the cast — and it happens to be the brainchild of a brand, not one of the major studios. King’s Hawaiian, maker of rolls and Hawaiian-inspired barbecue sauces, began thinking up new shopper marketing ideas to promote Halloween-themed recipes about four years ago. The result: The Legend of Hallowaiian, a feature-length animated film that boasts voice talent from Mark Hamill, Vanessa Williams and Tia Carrere. The film first aired exclusively on DirecTV and is now showing in a limited number of theaters across the country. Halowaiian may not instantly become a Halloween classic, but we love the brand’s willingness to think big and do something unexpected! Check it out.

Forty years ago, filmmaker John Carpenter dreamt up the eerie, off-kilter title music for Halloween that became synonymous with masked slasher films. For the 11th film in the series (celebrating its 40th anniversary this year) Carpenter, along with his son and godson, crafted a soundtrack that turns some of the original score’s tracks on their heads and sets a modern, creepy backdrop for the film (and probably your Halloween party, too!). Picasso once said “The urge to destroy is also a creative urge.” Famed anonymous street artist, Banksy, took that one to heart. ICYMI, moments after his 2006 painting “Girl with a Balloon” sold for $1.4 million at Sotheby’s last week, it self destructed. No one knows how the paper shredder built into the painting’s frame was activated or by whom, but the stunt was a genius move in creating buzz. We may never know who pressed the remote, whether Sotheby’s was in on it or simply how the battery lasted for 12 years, but we can take away the importance of doing something completely unexpected to gain your audience’s attention.

You probably don’t know the name Tyrsa, but you’ve likely seen his work. Childish Gambino’s (Donald Glover was also recently a Yalo Artist of the Week!) much-discussed music video “This Is America” starts with the name of the song written in scrawled cursive. Tyrsa, a French typography artist, designed that lettering and many others. He worked on the branding for House 99, David Beckham’s grooming line created in partnership with L’Oréal. And anybody who can make David Beckham look even better has definitely earned a spot on our Artist of the Week list! Check out Tyrsa’s work.

With his global art project, artist and TED Prize winner JR is turning the world inside out, in a big way. He’s using photography as a vehicle for change by, quite literally, putting a face to an issue. His team travels the world (including a visit right here in Atlanta last week!) taking portraits of people and printing them on large-scale paper to then post in public spaces. His “Inside Out” public art project works with communities online and around the world to print and display their photos and stories along the streets where they live. VIEW HERE

In order to think outside the box, it helps to get some new perspectives. When you think “fine art,” rapper and political activist, Killer Mike, isn’t exactly the first image that comes to mind. That’s one of the things that makes his addition to the board of directors of Atlanta’s High Museum of Art exactly perfect. It’s part of an effort to fulfill the museum’s mission of attracting a broader demographic, and a smart way for the museum to broaden its thinking about what’s possible. Read More Here

Arian Foster is a former Pro Bowl NFL running back for the Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins. Since retirement from the NFL, Arian has ventured into entertainment. He has a successful podcast entitled “Now What? With Arian Foster.” Foster always had a love for making music and recently released a hip hop album. The name of the album is “Flamingo & Koval” which is the intersection of the two streets in Las Vegas where Tupac Shakur was murdered. His hip hop stage name is “Bobby Feeno” which was inspired by Bobby McFerrin (Don’t Worry, Be Happy). At Yalo, we draw inspiration from music, sports, art, and film. A couple weeks ago, I was in Dallas Love airport flying home. While waiting for my flight, I see a CNN special of this guy making electric cigar box guitars and I think “What a rip-off, my buddy Mike Snowden makes those.” About 3 seconds later, they show Mike’s face! We had lunch when I returned to Atlanta and the first thing he tells me is that Ozzy Osbourne came to his house last fall for the A&E show, Ozzy and Jack. He says he has been sold out ever since! Each one of this artist and musician’s handcrafted guitars is a “one of a kind” instrument possessing an original tone, feel and look. With over 1,400 guitars crafted to date, Mike’s love of music is built into each and every one. Whether you are a beginner or a long time picker these instruments are easy and fun to play providing hours of musical possibilities. Check out Snowden Guitars to see Mike’s unique story and creations.

We love pushing boundaries around here and doing things no one else has ever done. So here’s a shout out to Cardi B for achieving something no other female rapper ever has: having two Number One hits on Billboard’s Hot 100. Crazy, right? And she’s only the fifth female rapper to even hit the top of the charts, in good company with Lauryn Hill, Eve, Nikki Minaj and Foxy Brown. But what got her there is more than just her musical talent and drive. A natural at self-promotion, the regular degular Bronx girl has taken authenticity to the next level to build her brand and her following. Check out what goes into creating the Cardi B Effect.
